STEAM

At Parteen National School we are proud of our high levels of engagement with STEAM learning. We believe that STEAM learning allows our pupils to have a better understanding of the world we live in, and helps them to develop resilience and confidence through the teaching of the five key STEAM skills: problem solving, critical thinking, pupil-led enquiry, collaboration and creativity & originality.

We are particularly proud of our ongoing work with the Clare Education Centre promoting STEAM Education in Co. Clare and across Europe as part of an Erasmus+ project.

We are delighted that our staff members engage actively with such initiatives and can see the positive benefits such collaborative relationships have on teaching and learning of STEAM across the school.

STEAM at Parteen School

  • Science

At Parteen School we pride ourselves on introducing science to our students in a practical, hands on, enjoyable and interactive way!

Teachers adapt their planning to meet the needs of their children and we engage fully in Science week and Space week every year.

We have a well-equipped science resource room and also enjoy using outdoor spaces on our school grounds and in the local area to bring the teaching of science to life!

Children in our senior classes enjoy taking part in projects such as ESB Science Blast every year.

  • Technology

We believe that technology and digital learning tools greatly enhance the learning experience and lifelong learning skills of all our students.

Our pupils have access to laptop and IPads and enjoy coding and programming lessons using Scratch, Minecraft and Lego We Do.

Pupils from our school enter coding competitions annually and we are proud of our achievements in these events.

  • Engineering

Engineering draws on all of the STEAM fields and encourages the children to apply their knowledge to solve problems and create devices and structures to meet a 21st Century need.

Children are encouraged to think creatively and critically while completing these tasks and will learn that failure is an important part of the engineering process.

While building and creating children develop skills such as problem solving and critical thinking.

We enjoy taking part in Engineers week every year

  • Arts

We believe in integrating the arts in our STEM lessons and understand that adding a creative element to our activities allows more learners to collaborate effectively in lessons and also that the introduction of the arts motivates a wider cohort of our pupils.

We introduce the arts in our lessons by:

    • adding a design element to the tasks

    • incorporating drama into the delivery of science lessons

    • encouraging the children to write raps/poems/songs to help them remember scientific or mathematical concepts

    • using coding programmes such as SCRATCH for creating drama/ music

  • Maths

Practical maths activities are an integral part of the teaching of maths at Parteen School. Children develop a range of skills which can be applied in science, technology and engineering activities. Children in our senior classes are confident using maths to record and analyse science investigation results, and are encouraged to use maths in practical ways to help explore and solve real world problems.

Our school takes an active part in Maths Week and children enjoy taking part in tasks such as maths trails around the school and ‘Maths Eyes’ activities.
